Excellence recognised in WA Young Professional Engineer of the Year 2019
Congratulations to Health Technology Management Unit’s Biomedical Engineer Alex Hayes, who was named WA Young Professional Engineer of the Year at Engineers Australia’s centenary gala on Thursday 1 August.
Recognised for demonstrating excellence in product development and technology support in biomedical engineering, Alex has worked on a variety of projects to help develop innovative ways of delivering healthcare. This includes the development of a novel medical device to treat abscesses without surgery. The simple, cost-effective device is ideal for low-cost healthcare settings such as rural and remote communities and has the potential to significantly reduce the impact of chronic disease on the community.
During his time at EMHS Alex has been a key contributor to the innovative work delivered by the Centre for Implant Technology and Retrieval Analysis. The team provides specialised solutions to complex trauma or skeletal deficiency that cannot be addressed using available commercial device options. Alex has recently moved to the Clinical Engineering team, where his skills are being applied to medical equipment management and procurement.
Alex was extremely humbled by the award. In his acceptance speech Alex explained it is the support and encouragement he has received over the years that has enabled him to deliver excellence in biomedical engineering and, as part of a multidisciplinary team, contribute to health care improvements for the community.
“Thank you to my mentors … who have at various times taken a chance on me. I’m extremely grateful and privileged to have been given the opportunity to work in my dream job so early in my career and I owe it to them for providing those opportunities to do what I love,” Alex said.
“I have the privilege to work on some exciting projects with amazing people from a variety of disciplines to try and deliver the best for our healthcare system. I couldn’t do what I do without them and I consider this award recognition of their tireless efforts and amazing work to deliver that service.”
Congratulations Alex and thank you for living our values and helping us to continue to deliver innovative, health care technology to the community.
