EMHS welcomes new medical interns 18 January 2021 Recently we welcomed 75 new medical interns to EMHS, where they will spend the next 12 months gaining firsthand experience across our hospitals and services in a variety of medical, surgical specialities and emergency medicine. During the year interns complete five placements at EMHS hospitals and services, including regional placements in partnership with the WA Country Health Service. Royal Perth Hospital Trauma Consultant Dr Sana has worked closely with the Post Graduate Medical Education team to mentor and provide support and guidance to young doctors that are starting their exciting new career at EMHS. “I believe in the field of Medicine a lot of things come with experience and training and it is always great to teach and train people and guide them through early years when things can be difficult and overwhelming,” said Dr Sana. “There is a big role of Mentors/Mentoring in any career pathway. We always need a sounding board with whom we can discuss, share and resonate our t...

  • Medical student using telehealth
Medical students ace Telehealth with the help of Royal Perth Hospital23 September 2020Royal Perth Hospital Outpatient Clinic Rooms were recently used to support the University of WA (UWA) WA Medical Students Society (WAMSS) annual mock Objective Structured Clinical Exams (OSCE) event for final year medical students, which included the inaugural use of telehealth stations. Telehealth Coordinator, Nandhini Natarajan and A/Outpatient Manager, Kim Hill coordinated four telehealth virtual rooms and video links to assist WAMSS to host another successful event. These stations consisted of a final year student hosting a consult with a remote patient and examiner who were dialing in via HealthDirect video conferencing. The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at UWA chose to include telehealth stations in the 2020 OSCE given the impact of digital healthcare during the COVID-19 response and growing demand beyond the pandemic. These stations involved patient interactions via video-conference and required students to comply with patient identification, information security an...

EMHS Youth Innovation Think Tank 2020 20 August 2020On Tuesday 11 August year ten and eleven students from seven high schools attended the annual EMHS Youth Innovation Think Tank. The EMHS Youth Innovation Think Tank pairs high school students with clinicians and subject matter experts to collaborate on innovation solutions to common health issues. This year we hosted students from Lakeland Senior High School, Mercy College, Swan View Senior High School, Comet Bay College, Belridge Senior High School, Methodist's Ladies College and Shenton College. The students, guided by their expert mentors from EMHS and Child and Adolescent Health Service (CAHS), tackled either telehealth digital literacy or adolescent patient transition with the goal of finding a workable solution. The students then pitched their ideas to an Executive Judging Panel, who chose Methodist's Ladies College (MLC) as the winning team. MLC focused on the issue of adolescent patient transition and developed an innovative ‘QRious’ system using Quick Response (QR...

RPH becomes first WA hospital to install revolutionary new imaging system 26 June 2020Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) has become the first hospital in Western Australia to install a new generation imaging system for patients undergoing specialised cardiac procedures. The hospital recently upgraded one of its three catheterisation laboratories (“cath labs”) with the ARTIS Icono Imaging system – a revolutionary new imaging technology system for cardiovascular procedures. The imaging system sits within the heart of a cardiac cath lab and represents the ‘brains’ and ‘eyes’ through which the cardiologist plans and performs a variety of procedures. This includes lifesaving angioplasty and stent implants for the treatment of heart attacks, implanting pacemakers and other devices to correct heart arrhythmias, and a range of other specialised cardiac procedures. Each year, RPH conducts more than 4,500 cardiac procedures and access to this latest technology will allow for enhanced image quality and faster data processing. This will allow cardiologists to make decisions faster and m...
  • Our RPH TMU scientists and staff on the RPH Medical Day Unit.
World Blood Donor Day14 June 2020Every year, on 14 June, we celebrate World Blood Donor Day and thank blood donors for the life-saving gift they give with each donation of blood. The event also aims to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and the important role they play in the provision of high quality care. Blood is a vital resource that can save and improve the lives of many, from people with life-threatening conditions and injuries, to those needing support for complex medical and surgical procedures. For a health system to be effective it must be able to provide all patients with the high quality, safe blood and blood products they need, and at EMHS we are committed to do just that. At RPH our team of scientists in the Transfusion Medicine Unit (TMU) ensure the compatibility, supply and safety of all blood products received by our patients. The lab scientists are integral in ensuring donated blood products are safely and expertly issued to the correct area for clinical staff to adminis...
