RPH Trauma Service

The Trauma Service at Royal Perth Hospital provides a world class, subspecialised multidisciplinary clinical team of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals that provide the full spectrum of care for injured patients, from initial reception and resuscitation through to discharge and reintegration into the community. The Service is directly responsible for the care of all major and multisystem trauma patients in Western Australia aged 14 and greater.

The Trauma Service at Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) is home to the State Adult Major Trauma Centre, and cares for more than 1100 major trauma patients annually, and 5000 minor trauma patients. The service cares for approximately 90% of adult major trauma in Western Australia.

Patients’ inpatient treatment and journey is coordinated from the dedicated 30-bed State Major Trauma Unit, where patients are admitted under the care of a team of dedicated subspecialist surgeons in trauma surgery, who work closely with colleagues from other specialties, nursing and allied health.

Research interests and focus

The Trauma Service has a strong focus on the safety and quality of clinical care, with embedded processes facilitating the ongoing development of the clinical care.

The research priorities are focusing around two areas:
