In a terrific display of teamwork and dedication, nine members of the Facilities Management and Infrastructure Team at East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS) have been honoured with the prestigious Quarter 1 2024 EMHS Values in Action Award.
The award, which recognises individuals and teams who serve as outstanding role models, was presented to the group for their swift and effective response to a critical incident at Armadale Health Service (AHS) late last year – a fire at one of the main switchboards supplying power to the hospital.
Under the guidance of Facilities Management Director Richard England, the team quickly mobilised, bringing in contractors and temporary power generators to ensure the continuous operation of the hospital. Their actions not only prevented further risks but also ensured minimal disruption to AHS' services.
EMHS Chief Executive Dr Lesley Bennett praised the team’s efforts and quick thinking.
“Without your combined agility and effort, and Richard’s outstanding leadership in managing this incident appropriately, Armadale could have experienced unplanned outages resulting in the entire hospital becoming unavailable and inaccessible for patients and the community,” Lesley said.
Proudly accepting the ViA award alongside his team members, Richard expressed deep gratitude for the recognition’.
“It’s great to get that acknowledgement for the team and what we do in the background,” he said.
Richard added that the response was not just a demonstration of expertise but also a unifying moment for the entire EMHS Facilities Team.
The incident prompted the establishment of a 24/7 emergency roster that brings together staff from AHS and Royal Perth Hospital (RPH), thereby fostering a stronger sense of community and collaboration.
Reflecting on the lessons learned, Richard emphasised the need for preparedness and responsiveness, especially when maintaining ageing facilities with available resources and budgets. The team's ability to think outside the box and devise alternative solutions was crucial in overcoming the challenges faced.
"It makes me feel very proud and honoured to be recognised for the work that we do. I think a lot of us think (it’s) just business as usual… I know a lot of the team think the same as well, so it's well received, that's for sure,” he smiled broadly.
Congratulations to the Facilities team members for their committed and collaborative approach to maintaining and managing our sites, as well as their ability to respond to any incidents rapidly and effectively. We feel safer knowing you’ve got our back!
