Communication and Assistive Technology Service

The Communication and Assistive Technology Service (CATS) provides specialist consultation and demonstration of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), computer access, environmental control and a range of assistive technology solutions to assist rehabilitation and independent living. Our outpatient clinic is located within the State Rehabilitation Service at Fiona Stanley Hospital. We are also the state-wide Community Aids and Equipment Program (CAEP) provider for complex devices.

Services

Our team of Rehabilitation Engineers and Speech Pathologists provides patient assessment, technical advice and equipment provision across:

  • AAC and assistive technology assessment, and specialist clinical advice
  • alternative access and mounting solutions for communication devices, phones, tablet and computers
  • advice on smart home options, voice control, accessible gaming, and voice banking
  • design and manufacture of custom engineered solutions, including computer access solutions, switches and specialised call bells
  • assistive technology and AAC training and education for patients, medical and allied health staff
  • management of the Motor Neurone Disease Association of WA’s AAC loan equipment.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Inpatients of East Metropolitan Health Service and South Metropolitan Health Service hospitals.
  • Outpatients requiring AAC and Assistive Technology consultation, including CAEP clients.

CATS is not a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provider but can provide consultative services to participants with self or plan managed Assistive Technology funds. If you wish to use CATS please consult your NDIS provider.

Clients outside of these criteria can access CATS via fee for service. Please contact us to discuss.
