Moorditj Walyan (Strong Lungs)

Moorditj Walyan

Moorditj Walyan (Strong Lungs) is a culturally responsive education program that aims to reduce smoking and vaping among Aboriginal people aged 16 years and over in the Perth metropolitan area. The program builds on the foundations of the Yarning It Up program and is delivered by three Senior Aboriginal Health Promotion Officers.

Moorditj Walyan delivers two types of sessions: one for community members, and one for service providers.

Community Session

Moorditj Walyan offers a safe, no shame space for Aboriginal community members who want to cut down or quit smoking or vaping.

The session covers:

• How smoking and vaping affect your health
• Supportive, no shame yarns
• Ways to manage stress, cravings and triggers
• Where to find free quit supports

Service Provider Session

Moorditj Walyan also delivers professional development for service providers who support Aboriginal clients.

The session covers:

• Health harms of smoking and vaping
• How to have supportive, culturally safe conversations with clients about quitting
• Referral pathways and available supports
