Armadale Hospital’s Midwifery Unit Manager Shannon Scari was a two-time winner at the recent East Metropolitan Health Service (EMHS)-Armadale Kalamunda Group (AKG) Nursing and Midwifery Awards.
Shannon was named 2025 EMHS Midwife of the Year for her dedication, empathy and stand-out care for mums-to-be and also took out the Excellence in Leadership Award.
Shannon, who has been a midwife for 17 years – and whose two children were born at Armadale Hospital – said she was delighted and proud to win the awards.
“It’s a special moment being awarded and especially being nominated by my colleagues,” she said.
“I feel grateful to all my mentors over the years, who have led me on the path to this achievement.”
Shannon chose midwifery after watching a birth during her nursing student days. She has since helped to deliver thousands of babies – once delivering 10 across two nightshifts.
“It’s a special role, where you’re part of a woman’s – and a family’s – journey and I feel grateful to be part of that journey each time,” Shannon said.
“Every birth, every labour is special.”
Trust, informed consent and open discussions were vital in developing a relationship between a woman and her midwife.
“It’s their birth and their outcomes and it’s you assisting them to achieve that,” Shannon said.
The judges said Shannon was the embodiment of the EMHS values of Kindness, Excellence, Respect, Integrity and Accountability and recognised her knowledge and understanding of hospital policies, guidelines and procedures.
The leadership award at the ceremony last week was an acknowledgement of Shannon’s exceptional management of staff and her dedication to their personal development.
