EMHS recognises the importance of creating a welcoming space within health services where Aboriginal People feel safe and confident that they will be respected and receive high quality care.
As a demonstration of this, EMHS’ Royal Perth Bentley Group unveiled its new Noongar name for Royal Perth Hospital as Walbirring Karlup on July 8 – during NAIDOC Week.
Walbirring Karlup – meaning Healing Place or Place That Brings Good Health – was agreed upon as the approved co-name for RPH after EMHS’ Aboriginal Health and Wellbeing Directorate consulted with prominent Noongar Elders.
Health Minister Meredith Hammat MLA and EMHS Acting Chief Executive Sandra Miller attended the co-naming ceremony, as did RPBG Executive Director Ben Noteboom.
In addition to the co-naming programme, EMHS has embarked on a transformative project to enrich the environment of RPH through the creation of a stunning mural along Lord Street, near the Outpatients building and the Emergency Department.
Acclaimed Aboriginal artist Yondee Shane Hansen was chosen as the lead artist.
