Royal Perth Hospital’s first surgical robot has reached a major milestone, assisting surgeons with more than 100 operations in just 16 weeks.

Royal Perth Hospital’s first surgical robot has reached a major milestone, assisting surgeons with more than 100 operations in just 16 weeks.
The milestone 100th procedure was performed on 3 August, marking a significant achievement for RPH’s surgical teams just months after the technology was introduced.
Head of Urology Dr Justin Vivian was on hand to mark the occasion, alongside members of the hospital’s surgical and perioperative teams.
The robot was unveiled at RPH in April and was put to work just days later, assisting Dr Ruben Rajan with a colorectal procedure on a man in his 70s.
Since then, it has been used across a growing range of procedures, assisting with 55 urology operations and 52 general surgery cases.
The introduction of robotic surgery has also supported innovation beyond the operating theatre, with RPH launching what is believed to be an Australian-first same-day discharge program for patients undergoing colectomy just weeks after the robot’s first operation.
The milestone highlights the rapid integration of robotic-assisted surgery into RPH’s surgical services and the growing expertise of teams using the technology to support patient care.
