Bentley Health Service’s “Damper Club” highlights the fun and therapeutic benefits of kneading 20 March 2019 At Bentley Health Service – which includes a catchment area of some of the most diverse population groups in Western Australia – the staff's motto is "amazing care" and that is exactly what they delivered last week when they initiated a "Damper Club". "We had a number of Aboriginal ladies from the North West of the State in the hospital at the same time who had all experienced a stroke and were understandably missing home," Bentley Health Service Occupational Therapist Jaya Saraswati said. "They mentioned that they traditionally made damper either daily or weekly when back at home. We thought it would be a good idea to try and make them feel as at home as possible and make damper on the ward." "Patients receiving therapy within a meaningful activity or what we call “occupation” is what occupational therapy is all about." "Kneading – as is involved when makin...

Putting a new thinking cap on - 3D printing skulls 01 August 2018 Congratulations to the tissue engineering team from our Health Technology Management Unit, Cell and Tissue Therapy WA and the Department of Neurosurgery who have now progressed to the final round of the 2018 WA Innovator of the Year Awards. The team of Dr Alan Kop (pictured, left) Dr David Morrison (pictured, right), Dr Stephen Honeybul and Dr Marian Sturm are now competing with only four other finalists in the Emerging Innovation Category of these important awards. This innovation could potentially allow the team to reconstruct a person’s skull after they have had a serious accident or cancer surgery by regrowing their own bone. The team are n...
  • The Wungen Kartup team at their NAIDOC Week 2019 celebration
NAIDOC Week 2019 at Wungen Kartup 01 January 0001 As part of the EMHS NAIDOC Week celebrations, the Wungen Kartup Specialist Mental Health Service recently hosted an event at the Graylands Campus. 100 guests from the Aboriginal community, including students, staff, mental health consumers and non-government organisations were treated to a bush BBQ and entertained by talented local singers and guest speakers. This year, the theme of NAIDOC Week is Voice. Truth. Treaty., and it is an opportunity to acknowledge the importance of the Aboriginal voice to Australia, and to celebrate the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to our community. Wungen Kartup provides specialised Aboriginal mental health services across the metropolitan area, with a ‘whole of family’ approach to service delivery.
